Monday Mother: Claire Macbeth at Tatty Bumpkin

Today it’s Claire Macbeth from Tatty Bumpkin. Chloe and her Freya loved the classes, and reading some familiar words further down reminded me how much Louis and I enjoyed toddler classes by Tatty Bumpkin local to us.

Another inspiring tale of a mother making it all work for her and her family…

Tell us about what you do – your mothering situation and your work outside of that.
I am mum to a gorgeous little 2 year old. I never thought motherhood would turn my life on its head, well I was wrong! Once having my daughter my old life seemed so, so far away.

The love that we both got from our Baby Bumpkin classes – every mum should experience it. For me it really was life changing. So I bought the Tatty Bumpkin franchise for South Essex (my classes run in Hornchurch, Brentwood and Billericay).

What kind of work did you do before having children?

Before motherhood it was insurance in London – a profession that I thought I’d work in until I retired. That sounds quite depressing actually but I really enjoyed it. It was an industry that I fell into after finishing college, and one that I was comfortable in. Even while pregnant, I honestly thought that it was something that I would go back to… little did I know then.

How did you get into your current work?

I was looking for classes to go to in Southend which is where we live. A friend of mine had mentioned Baby Bumpkin; I practised yoga before having Heidi so thought that this would be a nice class for us and a small stepping stone to get me back into yoga.

I will always remember that first class, Heidi was 9 weeks old and during our relaxation I just felt so calm and at peace, it was the first time I had felt this since she was born. I knew then that this class was special. Each week we attended class and our love for the Baby and Tatty Bumpkin programme grew.

I remember chatting with a friend (our little ones were the same age) about classes that we were going to. I remember saying then that I could just do Baby Bumpkin classes all day. Something clicked inside, and I thought, you know what – I can. So I did!

What drives you?

From a work perspective, I’m a bit of a perfectionist so I constantly strive to do better. Anything that I put my hand to I want to do as best I can and make it work and run as best it can.

As a whole, it’s Heidi. All of this is for her. My mum was a SAHM throughout my childhood so in all of my early memories she’s there. I want a little bit of that for Heidi. To be there for her as much as I can, to capture those little moments that make you laugh so hard and swell with pride.

What is your biggest challenge in making it all work?

I suppose me. My time management when at home can easily skip between my two worlds… I have to consciously stop when I think I’ll just work on something for 10 minutes when it’s time for Heidi and I. And likewise when I should be doing admin and I start doing household chores!!

What are you most proud of?

I get an enormous sense of pride when parents/ nursery workers (we do Tatty Bumpkin in Pre-Schools/ Nurseries) tell me little stories of how the children are talking about and playing Tatty Bumpkin during their free time and at home. Just to know that they are remembering all that we do gives me a fabulous sense of achievement.

I’m super proud of my daughter; she’s funny and clever and does a wicked Bendy, Giggly, Clever and Strong routine and each day, she shows me exactly why I chose this route.

Where will your work take you in the future? What are your plans?

I’m so happy with our Baby Bumpkin and Tatty Bumpkin classes; I have such flexibility and balance between my work and personal life. We offer classes in preschools, nurseries and primary schools too so I’d love expand this further to deliver more classes to parents and children and let them know how fab Tatty Bumpkin is!!

What would you say to yourself as a brand new mum?
Relax and breathe – you’re doing brilliantly.

Accept any offer of help that comes your way. Even when it’s a friend that comes round to visit and ends up making the tea.

Self care – what do you do to fill your cup?
I love reading so a chance to escape into a good book and a cuppa is pure heaven. I try to catch up with friends for dinner; it’s nice to be Claire (with a small handbag and a glass of wine ?) again for a couple of hours.

I’ve a super supportive partner and family. So spending time with them always makes me smile.
